Observability in the sense required for knowledge depends on an account of the justification of beliefs formed by sense perception. I argue that the correct account of perceptual justification opens the possibility for direct observation of so called theoretical entities like electrons.

I consider some of the epistemological issues raised by the movie The Matrix, including the question of whether one can ever really know whether (or at least be justified in believing that) one is in the matrix, and whether it even makes sense to have any beliefs or concepts at all in the face of radical system-wide error that the matrix scenario seems to imply is possible.
